West
Gate Tunnel

location

Melbourne, Victoria

project value

AUD $10.2 billion

contract

Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Joint Venture (JV), Design and Construct (D&C)

Transurban has engaged the CPBJH Joint Venture (CPB Contractors & John Holland Group) under a Design & Construct (D&C) contract. The project is overseen by the West Gate Tunnel Authority on behalf of the Victorian Government.

Project Overview

The West Gate Tunnel Project is a major transport upgrade designed to reduce congestion on the West Gate Bridge, improve connections to Melbourne’s CBD and western suburbs, and enhance freight access to the Port of Melbourne. The project delivers twin tunnels, 4 kilometres outbound and 2.8 kilometres inbound, linking the West Gate Freeway in Yarraville to CityLink in Docklands, providing a vital second river crossing over the Maribyrnong River. Additional works include widening the West Gate Freeway from eight to 12 lanes between the M80 Ring Road and Williamstown Road, constructing elevated roads above Footscray Road, and improving connections to CityLink, Wurundjeri Way, and key transport corridors.

The project required comprehensive quality and risk management, and process and resource optimisation to support complex delivery requirements. This involved leading cross-functional teams, improving construction workflows, and ensuring compliance, resulting in successful integration of new transport links, efficient record management, and enhanced project execution.
