Project Overview
The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Rail Duplication Project is a major infrastructure upgrade designed to increase rail capacity, reduce congestion, and improve service reliability along one of Victoria’s busiest transport corridors.
The project scope includes duplicating 8 kilometres of track, upgrading South Geelong and Marshall stations, and constructing elevated rail bridges to eliminate level crossings at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway. Additional upgrades include modernised signalling, over 5 kilometres of new walking and cycling paths, and expanded green spaces to improve connectivity. These improvements support five peak-hour train services and three off-peak services for Marshall and Waurn Ponds stations, and lays the groundwork for future network expansion.
A proactive quality and completions strategy, early alignment on reporting metrics, process efficiencies, and stakeholder engagement led to on-time deliveries, reduced rework, and strong overall execution. Optimised processes in defect management, asset tracking, and record closure positioned this as a top-performing project within the Rail Projects Victoria portfolio.
